28 02 12: Recent Release - We Need to Talk About Kevin

We Need to Talk About Kevin (Ramsay '11)

Following her brilliant debut Ratcatcher and the under-appreciated Morvern Callar, Lynne Ramsay is finally back with the big screen adaptation of the Lionel Shriver's award-winning back of the same title.

This is a story about parenting, growing up, guilt, and not a very nice child...  But what we really need to talk about are Tilda and Lynne.  Obviously after coming to Roxy last September to introduce a film as part of the Scala Forever season, Tilda is our number 1 favourite actress, but this is another stellar performance as the mother of Kevin and the pain, anguish and guilt she goes through.

Behind the camera, Ramsay delivers another bold, dramatic performance in directing a tremendously good adaptation of the novel.  This is stylish, chilling, thought-provoking filmmaking and definitely one of our films of the year already.  Do not miss!

02 06 13: Django Unchained

Django Unchained  (Tarantino '12)

Tarantino is back, with a real return to form in this 'slavery western'.  The slavery issues aren't really anything to get worked up about, but then this was never a Zero Dark Thirty type of film, this is Tarantino on full-entertainment mode.

With an excellent cast of Jamie Foxx, Oscar-winner Cristoph Waltz, Leonardo di Caprio and Samuel L Jackson amongst many, this is a well-paced, sprawling Western style revenge story, with Tarantino's usual great dialogue, stylish set-ups and blend of violence and humour.  Great film.  Highly recommended.
