"La Bobal and other stories about wine" was started in March 2008 by Canadian-British artist and filmmaker Zev Robinson looking at how the grapes in the Utiel-Requena region of Spain where he currently resides made their way into a bottle of wine of the type that he would buy when he lived in London.
He quickly discovered however that the relatively unknown Bobal grape with its unique flavour is only to be found in this region and not anywhere else in the world, but that worldwide social economic pressures are starting to have a major impact in the area. Whereas the Bobal was once used to profitably produce bulk wine, the price of grapes are now in free fall and the growers who's families have produced grapes over generations are growing old with no-one to take over the land. Over the last couple of decades however, small wineries have sprung up, creating quality bottled wine using the Bobal grape, either alone or mixed with other varieties, and promoting its unique taste and qualities.
What started as personal side project became a major piece of work for Zev Robinson whose background as an artist informs a personal, poetic approach to the work. The grape growers, winery owners, wine makers and others speaking of their situations and sometimes conflicting concerns, are weaved together with images of the wine-process from start to finish. providing a powerful insight into the traditions and future of the region together with the artistry and economics of wine-making.
The first part of the documentary screening this evening, will cover the Bobal grape and the current situation in the area that it is grown. The two further parts look at the marketing of the wine and the wine-making process.
